Shake off the mid-winter blues and the cold with a concert featuring renowned vocalist Denzal Sinclaire, assisted by Ottawa musicians Mark Ferguson on piano and trombone and John Geggie on double bass. While Mark and John have played together for many years in numerous different musical configurations, they first had the chance to perform with Denzal last year when he was featured in a pops concert with the NAC Orchestra. The connection was instantaneous and infectious; when the opportunity presented itself to do another concert as a trio, they jumped at the chance. Denzal’s background as a jazz singer is broad, including collaborations with the Count Basie Orchestra as well as the famous English duo of Cleo Laine and John Dankworth; he has also been associated with the vocal stylings of Nat King Cole but he is also comfortable playing piano, drums and guitar, in addition to singing. Between the two of them, Mark and John have performed with a who’s who of jazz artists including Henry Mancini, Barbara Streisand, Holly Cole, John Scofield, Billy Hart, Rosemary Clooney, Aretha Franklin and the legendary Sheila Jordan. Expect an evening of swinging tunes, fabulous melodies, interactive improvisation and great grooves – the perfect music February tonic.

Denzal Sinclaire is one of Canada’s most popular jazz vocalists and is ranked among the finest jazz singers of his generation. A graduate of McGill University’s Jazz Performance program (Montreal), he possesses that rare ability to achieve, from the moment he steps on stage, a profound emotional interaction with his audience. His passionate and sincere delivery caresses every song he sings. He touches the listener with the purity of the message.

Mark Ferguson is an Ottawa based pianist, trombonist, composer, arranger, producer, and music educator. He has performed with many of the world’s great artists, including Ella Fitzgerald, Tony Bennett, Gil Evans, Nelson Riddle, Dionne Warwick, Natalie Cole, Tom Jones, Engelbert Humperdink, Rosemary Clooney, Carol Channing, Rob McConnell & the Boss Brass, Holly Cole, Manteca, The Funk Brothers, and the National Arts Centre Orchestra.

John Geggie is active in the Ottawa-Gatineau region as a double bass player, educator and composer. For the 13 years, he programmed and performed in the acclaimed Geggie Series at the National Arts Centre, sharing the stage with jazz musicians from Canada, the US and Europe. A member of the award-winning Chelsea Bridge and the Juno-nominated Angstones, John has toured extensively in Canada, the U. S. and Europe.
